about the host
Hi! My name is Agnes, and I am a half Japanese-half Brazilian, born and raised on a beautiful island in the south of Brazil. After hopping around Sao Paulo, New York, Seattle and London, Amsterdam is home and I'm very content that after much hard work I have formed meaningful long-lasting friendships and a community - which I'm excited to share and expand it further with the @sakai.cooks project.
Growing up in Brazil, Domingos (or Sundays) are spent around a big table, surrounded by family, friends and neighbours - everyone is welcome and the food is abundant. My father would wake up early to grab fresh produce from the market, while my mom would cut fresh flowers from our garden to set a beautiful table. Lunch turns into desert, then coffee, afternoon tea and suddenly it's dinner time. When my father passed away under two years ago, I really wanted to connect to that memory, his teachings in the kitchen, and the feeling of taking care of one another.
My cooking is a representation of who I am and where I've been. That could be a Brazilian-Japanese fusion influenced by my heritage, a recent trip or the beautiful produce in season.
